I'm Not Leaving Google Yet, But GoodSearch is Worth a Look

Until today, I hadn't heard of GoodSearch. Courtesy of Nate Ritter's blog post, Why I Left Google, I was introduced to the search engine. Quick sidebar: Nate does a great job of writing this headline. It's provocative (since Google-buzz is insane), and since I've grumbled about Blogger recently, the title caught my eye. I'm sure that'll be the case for a lot of people, and while Nate's playing a bit of trickery here, the cause is an interesting one. GoodSearch will donate money to the charity of your choice every time you search using their website. It's only about $0.01/search but they explain how it works very clearly on the site. You don't have to pay, of course, to use the search engine. And all of those pennies can really add up when you think about all the searching you do in a day. The engine is powered by Yahoo! so I'd expect the results are just as good as anywhere else (including Google). You can also add in your own charities (although I haven't tried it). I think they're mostly US-based, so I would probably experiment with some Canadian ones. I'd LOVE to hear from some actual charities that have benefited from GoodSearch to get the straight dope. (I don't want actual dope from the charities, it's an expression, you know what I mean!) Good on GoodSearch for an innovative idea. I'll be trying it out for awhile (if I can remember to STOP typing http://www.google.com), and we'll see how it goes. (Technorati Tags: , , )

Thanks for the linkage Benjamin. :) I appreciate it.

No problem Nate. I'm glad I found your blog, and you may have just started a wee controversy which is always fun.

I use goodsearch too and love it.
It's kind of a NO-brainer. If you search the internet anyway, you might as well donate to charity at the same time.

If you go to the goodsearch.com home page and put "elephants" in the "I'm supporting" box, you can see how well the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee is doing. They have generated over $1,000 for their cause.

Amazing!!!!

Wow, $1,000 - that's amazing for what's probably a fairly small charity.

I'm going to try and promote Goodsearch a bit more, it deserves it. Sure (as someone pointed out on Nate Ritter's blog), Google donates millions, but Goodsearch democratizes the process in a great way AND brings our attention to charities we otherwise wouldn't have known about or donated to.

Thanks for the comment, hope you stick around Anonymous (and become "not Anonymous" in the future!)
